South Dakota Baby Buffaloes Frolic in Their Fifteen Minutes of Fame
From April showers to May flowers, spring in South Dakota also brings the start of the peak season for viewing baby animals. It's the most adorable time of year in the state, and the PR team at MMGY Global wanted to share South Dakota’s celebrated stars of the season, the endearing baby buffaloes, with the nation.
As soon as spring arrived, the South Dakota Tourism and MMGY Global teams patiently awaited the birth of Custer State Park’s first baby bison. Custer State Park is home to 1,300 bison that roam freely, sometimes making appearances at the side of onlookers’ cars! As soon as news came that the first calves had been born they sprang into action. South Dakota Tourism’s videographer found where the baby “buffalo roamed” and without disturbing the proud mama buffalo captured more than a minute and a half of footage of the knobby-kneed, cinnamon buffs exploring their new South Dakota home.
The MMGY teams immediately began promoting the video on South Dakota’s social channels and spreading the word about the first calves of the season to national media. The footage of these fluffy, and somewhat awkward, buffalo newborns captured the hearts and attention of national outlets such as TIME, Mashable, Business Insider, Yahoo, Travel + Leisure, MSN and more.
The baby buffaloes also made a splash with their social media debut on South Dakota's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. On Facebook, the 90-second video clip was viewed by more than 144,000 fans, who reacted (liked, loved, and wow-ed) over 5,600 times. It was also shared by nearly 3,000 people on Facebook. Twitter’s 15-second breaking news video garnered more than 7,600 impressions and nearly 240 engagements, and Instagram’s clip was viewed by more than 1,780 people.
For those who just can’t get enough of the baby buffalo via your computer screens, we encourage you to take a trip to see them in action along Custer State Park’s 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road. And while you’re there, make sure to take a quick drive and pay homage to 75 years of greatness at Mount Rushmore. 2016 marks the 75th anniversary of completion for the iconic memorial, which we’ll be hard at work promoting throughout the rest of the year. Happy travels!
