The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel Win Travel + Leisure SMITTY Award 2014 for Best Contest/Giveaway
June 9, 2014 – (Kansas City, Mo.) The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel has been recognized for innovative social media efforts with a Travel + Leisure SMITTY (Social Media in Travel + Tourism) Award 2014 in the category of Best Contest / Giveaway.
The campaign, which was developed and executed by agency of record MMGY Global, brought five influential Google Glass beta testers from across the country to explore the Southwest Florida destination and share their experiences on social media in real-time, marked the first time the new technology was used as a means of marketing a tourism destination. Through original content tagged with #FindYourIsland and #ThroughGlass, the campaign generated awareness for the destination among new markets, as the beta testers or “explorers” were chosen from a variety of geographic and demographic backgrounds. It also helped shatter the perception that the destination caters primarily to older travelers by showcasing a wide variety of unconventional activities available in the destination, as captured by explorers. Those viewing and interacting with the explorers’ content online were invited to enter to win a trip to the destination and their own pair of Google Glass.
