#MMGYTravels: Finding KC in Chicago
The Trip: To show Chicago how we do Kansas City
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Miles Traveled: 515 miles
Destination Highlight: Seeing the line wrapped around the building to get into our speakeasy-themed experience before the doors were even open
It takes less than an hour to fly from Kansas City to Chicago. You’d think during my five years of living in KC that I would’ve visited! That’s exactly why MMGY Global and Visit KC teamed up to travel to the Windy City to show Chicagoans how we do arts and culture in KC – and how easy it is to visit and experience it themselves.
From the moment we arrived, Chicago projected a bustling energy that matched our team’s excitement for the busy days ahead. We hit the streets equipped with a food cart full of KC-made Shatto ice cream sandwiches designed with a hidden password. We passed them out to residents and encouraged them to come to our Kansas City Prohibition-style event – password required – the next night. The speakeasy was a subtle nod to our past and, more importantly, highlighted the city’s current Golden Age.
Jazz musicians and performers from KC held pop-up performances in busy areas of the city – like Michigan Avenue – on the hot August day. Then, we capped off the day with a team outing to Safehouse where, fittingly, we also needed a secret password to get in.
The next night, we were absolutely overwhelmed by the Chicago crowd that attended our event, lining the block and filling the event space to the absolute max capacity – all while enjoying sips, tastes, sounds and sights of Kansas City. The event was only possible through Kansas City partners such as The Rieger, Corvino Supper Club, Quixotic and Eboni Fondren. We can’t wait to share the final campaign results!
The morning of our flight back to Kansas City was spent walking from the hotel to the Bean and back, taking in as many last-minute sights as possible. We admired the incredible architecture of each building we passed by. Being able to appreciate a destination is truly a privilege of traveling with MMGY Global, but being able to share my own hometown experiences and passion for KC was my favorite takeaway from this activation and trip to Chicago.
