With competition from other African destinations vying for tourism dollars, MMGY Global was tasked with creating a new site for Namibia, Africa, that would put this vast region of geographic diversity out ahead of the pack.
Our objective was to create a new website that focused on attracting foreign visitors by showcasing geography, wildlife, culture and the history of Namibia. We also needed to provide travel agents the tools and information they needed to plan vacations for their clients. In addition, the site had to create a presence for tourism-related businesses in Namibia, since many of them had poor websites – or no website at all.
MMGY utilized photography that highlights the diversity and unique qualities of the country. To accomplish the kaleidoscope effect, we developed a cutting-edge photo gallery that displays hundreds of photos through an interactive element and then allows the user to click on a photo, zoom in for a detail and tag the photo as a favorite. The location of each photo is also present, presenting geographic diversity and encouraging exploration of the entire country’s offerings.
We also created an enhanced map solution that allows the visitor to browse categories of interest. This not only helps the user plan a trip but also supports the exposure of tourism business partners. By using a professional CMS for the back end, we gave the Namibia marketing team the ability to easily manage all site content internally.
The new site is a huge international success, and, in February 2012, the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) awarded MMGY Global a platinum award for its development. Since the launch, we have seen steady increases in traffic, with total site visits up 28% and overall organic traffic up 52%. The growth of informational keyword searches, coupled with the increase in informational landing pages (Attractions, FAQ, About Us), indicates an improved targeting of content.
